A vacuum is not the most thrilling purchase. It’s not a new pair of jeans, or a lipstick color that gives you a little instant boost the first time you wear it. This vacuum is not the kind of home product you would proudly display like a chic coffee table or a comfortable chaise lounge. The best vacuums make themselves disappear. We can only appreciate the outcomes of their work — sparkling hardwood floors, perfectly groomed rugs — after we’ve used them and they’re once again hidden away in a hall closet. A bad vacuum however will not be able to resist making its presence felt. It might be too heavy and difficult to maneuver that it turns cleaning into a fitness routine, or it has such poor suction that even after multiple passes your floors remain with dust and crumbs. The issue with picking the right vacuum is that all promise big things. (No company will tell you that the filter will come out every time you empty your canister.) The writers and editors at the Strategic Institute took it upon themselves to test various vacuums. Top-rated and new vacuums were picked. There aren’t any major duds however, there are some vacuums that we think are excellent.
